This course deals with the study of patterns and system of sounds and its relationship to the formation of words in the English language.

This is a three-unit course that provides a strong background to understand the various meanings of the terms ‘discourse’, Discourse Analysis, and Discourse Studies. The concept of this course covers the use of language in a given text across social contexts. With discourse analysis, language learners will be guided to understand the use of language uppermost in the cognitive aspect of language in various classroom activities and exercises other than the use of language for communication. In addition, this course shares different views on how text is structured beyond sentence-level; how talk follows regular patterns in a wide range of different situations; the complex areas as intonation operate in communication; and how norms and their realizations in language differ from culture to culture.
