Student Conduct

VSU students shall always uphold the ethical standards of the university, and shall conduct themselves properly not only in their actions but also in the words they use, including what they post online.

Article 1 Sec. IV, VSU Code: “Publishing or circularizing derogatory statements against the university, its faculty, staff and fellow students. “

Minimum Penalty: Suspension for one (1) semester but not more than two (2) semesters.

Maximum Penalty: Exclusion/ Expulsion

Academic Honesty

Academic dishonesty or simply cheating is defined as a student's use of unauthorized assistance with intent to deceive an instructor or other such person who may be assigned to evaluate the student's work in meeting course requirements. (NIU, 2021)

Examples of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to the following: cheating during examination, plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification, multiple submissions without faculty approval, and misuse of academic materials.

The following are some provisions on cheating/ academic dishonesty stipulated in the VSU Code:

Article VI Sec. 3, VSU Code:

“Cheating in any form is not tolerated. Some examples of this are cheating in classes, taking advantage of others’ work or allowing others to take advantage of one’s work.”

Article I Sec. 2B, VSU Code:

“Cheating during examination – the student is automatically given a final grade of 5.0 (failed) in that particular subject or course.”

In addition, such offense is also punishable by:

First offense: Suspension of not less than 30 days but not more 60 days.

Second offense: Suspension of not less than 1 semester but not more than 2 semesters.

Third offense: Exclusion/ Expulsion

Math 134e - Abstract Algebra

This course is a study of basic algebraic structures such as groups, rings, integral domains, and fields. It provides a basic understanding of relations focusing on isomorphism. It aims to enhance the student’s skills in constructing mathematical proofs and develop their symbolic thinking and appreciation of mathematical structures.
