It has been stressed that all extension activity requires careful planning if it is to be effective. No extension activity is planned in isolation for it I always done either in a multi stakeholders or interdisciplinary team; every demonstration, public meeting or film show is part of an overall extension program through which an extension agent and farmers work toward the agricultural development of their area.

An extension program with clearly defined objectives is helpful to local farmers, the agent himself, his senior extension officers and other rural development agencies. For the farmers, it shows both what they can expect from the extension service and how effective the agent is. For the agent, the program provides a firm basis for planning extension projects and activities on a monthly and/or weekly bases and for anticipating well in advance what resources will be needed. Senior extension officers can use programs to assess agents' performance, to offer advice for improvement and to justify requests for additional staff, equipment and funds. Furthermore, the program helps other agencies to coordinate their activities with what the agent is doing. However, programs can only be used in these ways if they are well planned and administered and/or managed and made available to all concerned and/ or to be involved in the implementation of the project..

In this course, a number of important principles, approaches, and practices will be discusses to prepare and guide extension graduate students in planning and administering extension program.
